Three key issues in Samoa are:
- Uncontrolled land clearing of sloping land (both agricultural clearing and agrodeforestation)
- Fertility decline/nutrient depletion through unsustainable farming practices
- Soil erosion – mainly surface erosion by rainwater
These issues can be accentuated by:
- Land tenure and land disputes
- Lack of awareness of the impact of agricultural activities; and
- Lack of information and agrotechnology about sustainable farming practices.
