Soil Threats

Three key issues in Samoa are:

  • Uncontrolled land clearing of sloping land (both agricultural clearing and agrodeforestation)
  • Fertility decline/nutrient depletion through unsustainable farming practices
  • Soil erosion – mainly surface erosion by rainwater

These issues can be accentuated by:

  • Land tenure and land disputes
  • Lack of awareness of the impact of agricultural activities; and
  • Lack of information and agrotechnology about sustainable farming practices.
